“What ja Pack?”

Celebrities share their packing secrets and fetishes with Bill Giering

Alice Cooper

We all have a dark side along with the ability to hide it pretty well under our brightly colored golf shirts and phony caring smiles. It’s not often that we meet someone who portrays his dark side in public, hiding true warmth and a dry hilarious since of humor. His warmth was magnetizing and his dry wit … well you can judge for yourself in this golf fashion interview with the wildest dressed man in show business: Alice Cooper.

(Alice is slender and in good shape he has a tight wiry build and more tightly wired personality. He talks faster than I can hear. His black pony tail cascades over the back of his white visor, unless the visor is turned backwards, which seems to happen about every 30 seconds.

F&G: Alice, if you were going on a five day golf vacation, days in the 70’s and nights in the 50’s, one night is a fancy evening, what would you pack?

Alice: Let's start with the shoes, I only wear white shoes.  Black shoes and brown shoes look clunky, dark shoes are not golf shoes, so I would bring two pair of white. I never wear shorts only slacks. I would bring 3 pairs of my wildest colored J. Lindeberg slacks, and a couple of his matching wide belts with the Big JL on the buckle … very cool goods.

Lindeberg is way ahead of everybody else with colors, style. He is not afraid of being retro like in the 70’s when it was a great time for golf fashion. But the slacks have to be freshly pressed because the crease in the front helps you line up your putts better … Know-what-I- mean?

F&G: Not exactly … but let’s save your putting style for later. What kind of shirts would you bring?

Alice: I like the Lindeberg shirts, but this year I’m all about IZOD, they have some extreme stuff like their breathable shirts. They work. They also have some 70’s colors, bright, vibrant, wow stuff that make you feel alive, play better. The more outrageous you dress the better you have play, you have to play up to your image … didn’t you know that?

F&G: Hmmmm?

Alice: If I played on the Champions Tour I would play in Full Alice; painted face, leather, blood —  the whole full blast Alice look. I could bring that tour alive, leather bondage vest, the fans would love it. Those guys are forgetting their roots, where they came from. They are way too conservative, they were all bizarre 70’s guys but the way they dress now is boring to the fans. These guys  need to show where they came from.

( I can visualize Alice walking to the first tee at a Champions tour event with “Welcome to my nightmare” blasting in the background. Perfect.)

F&G: Tell me about your new book?

Alice: It’s called “Golf Monster … My 12 steps to becoming a golf addict.”  If you’re a rock fan or a serious golfer you will love this one, it’s been a blast to write.

F&G: Everyone in Scottsdale is talking about your Solid Rock Foundation. What’s that all about?

Alice: I have been doing that for about 13 years. I started it with Chuck Savale to do something outrageous for teens in the Scottsdale area. We have raised way over a million in the last couple years. And with the help of Grand Canyon University we are going to build the hottest teen center in the universe.
We should be breaking ground in late 07 or the beginning of 08. It’s like a YMCA on steroids but based on music. It will have a recording studio, a stage — the local kids are going to be all over it.

F&G: Back to packing, what else would you bring?

Alice: I pack a lot of underwear but I never bring it home, I throw it away. I buy big boxes of it for the tour bus, then after a performance I throw it away. It costs too much to have cleaned in hotels. Can you believe it costs 7 times more to have it cleaned than it does to buy new. Just throw it away.

Who would have known, under the Mascara, and way behind the insanity … there is no calm. Only deeper passions for golf and for kids … Long live Rock & Roll.

Katherine Roberts

Like every guy that’s addicted to the Golf Channel I was looking forward to watching Big Break One. It seemed like it an interesting concept and I knew the show would take off and become very popular. At least that’s what I told my wife.

Actually I had a “thing” for Katherine Roberts who was MC’ing the show with Rick Smith up in Michigan. I even bought her Video “Yoga for Golfers”. I was stretching and breathing with her most morning and I was making some real progress.

Katherine and I had a thing going on --- except she didn’t know it.

Katherine is an international fitness expert, the fitness guru with the golf channel, she is an author and has her own line of golf fitness equipment. She is a very bright and hard working entrepreneur. More importantly she has a great since of humor, and plays a good game of golf; maybe a 16 handicap, but she can Rip it, she can’t always find it...But she can Rip it.

So it was a fantasy come true (well almost) to meet and ask Katherine my favorite question: “What ja Pack?”

Q.) Katherine, if you were going on a 5 day golf vacation expecting days in the 70’s, nights in the 50’s and one night was a fancy evening… What would you pack?

A.) Oh, Please… This is going to make me look like a complete ditz, I really need a packing expert. I am such a defensive packer, I bring way too much. I’m pretty solid in other parts of my life with time management and organizational skills but when it comes to packing … I’m a 40 handicapper at best.

I usually bring two work-out outfits for each day, so that’s 10 outfits. The Nike collection is fun this year and they travel great. I always bring my own yoga mat, and power swing trainer, that’s a must if I’m playing golf. With yoga and work-out clothes, I have always felt that sensibility has to override fashion.

For golf I like slacks or Capri’s, I only buy outfits, never individual pieces. So I would bring 6 golf outfits, just in case. I stay with the Nike golf line but I mix it up with matching jackets and sweaters for each day. This season the ECCO shoes for ladies are stunning, I bring a pair for each day to match my outfit… 5 pair of golf shoes.

My Mom, my whole family does this, we bring food; Almonds and other nuts and I always bring fruit and small healthy snacks. I carry Pena Water, Molten Brown Spritzer’s and Emerge C.  I never like to dehydrate; I try to stay ahead of that. Some times I have boxes of my favorite liquids sent ahead to the resorts.

Q: At Night?

A.) On active golf trips I like to dress more sensual in the evenings for a contrast; jewelry, softer fabrics, flowing feminine pieces. I also bring way too many handbags .. I love the Cole Haan bags and accessories.

Q.) What do you wear on the Plane?

A.) The plane is work time for me, I’m either writing on my Laptop for my columns or reading golf magazines I’ll bring 3-4 of those. My carry on is full of electronics, I always carry my favorite book: “Sanctuary of the Soul” it’s a collection of meditations that comfort me as much as the almonds. I bring a picture of my husband and my dogs.

I dress in layers, usually yoga slacks a simple top and soft sweater, comfortable shoes.

Q.) When you hosted the Big Break One with Rick Smith up in Mich. It seemed like it was cold and rained everyday.

A.) You wouldn’t believe how bad it got… You know, maybe I don’t pack so bad. BG
