The Dunas Course at Terras da Comporta will join a select group of Portuguese courses who will head east to Abu Dhabi this month to take part for the first time in the 10th Asia Golf Tourism Convention (AGTC 2024) – the continent’s most important golf tourism industry event.
Fresh from attending January’s PGA Show in Orlando – where Terras da Comporta created history in 2023 by becoming the first course in Portugal to exhibit at the show – representatives from the acclaimed Lisbon course will be part of a Portuguese delegation who will travel to the Middle East to promote golf in Portugal.
Taking place in Abu Dhabi from March 20-22 – the first time the event has been staged outside south-east Asia – the convention will feature key figures from Asia’s golf tourism industry including more than 100 golf tour operators.
Located equidistant between East and West, AGTC 2024 is set to attract a wide-reaching collection of international golf tour operators, all selling golf destinations in Asia, Australasia, the Indian Ocean and the Gulf States.
Rodrigo Ulrich, director of golf at Terras da Comporta, said: “Having exhibited at the PGA Show in America for the last two years – the first venue in Portugal to do so – it was the natural next step for us to look at promoting Terras da Comporta in Asia.
“With the number of different countries that now fly into Lisbon, Portugal is more accessible than ever before. Taking part in AGTC 2024 is a fantastic opportunity for us to speak to the key influential people in the Asian golfing world and to showcase our course to one of the most important and fastest-growing golf markets in the world.”
Located one hour south of Lisbon, The Dunas Course at Terras da Comporta is David McLay-Kidd’s first golf course in mainland Europe and has made headlines around the world since opening last June – including being named as the ‘World’s Best New Golf Course’ and ‘Europe’s Best New Golf Course’ at the 2023 World Golf Awards.
Situated on the coast in a secluded setting on the edge of the Sado Estuary Nature Reserve, The Dunas Course – which measures 6,646 metres off the back tees – has been created over 84 hectares of natural, sandy terrain and has been built using the highest sustainable practices.
Owned by Vanguard Properties, Portugal’s largest real estate developer who took ownership of the development in 2019, Terras da Comporta features two large developments: Torre, comprising 365 hectares of land and where a second course designed by Sergio Garcia is being built (set to follow in 2025), and Dunas, which occupies around 1,011 hectares.
Complementing The Dunas Course will be a new clubhouse and golf academy. Away from the fairways, an array of lifestyle activities will be available including horse-riding, wellness, tennis, padel, pickleball and many other sports, with a wide range of plots for hotels, tourist and residential condominiums also on offer.
